I liked this much more than I thought I would. I picked it up thinking that it was going to be a series of mostly unconnected gothic tales (albeit set in the one town) but the protagonist who collects the tales was more important and central than I expected him to be. I enjoyed the gruesomeness of the stories and the lightly touched philosophical exploration of why people enjoy hearing (/reading) bad things that happen to others.

Each resident has a horrid tale to tell to help pass the time and also to make their own lives seem a little less ghastly. Chapters alternate between the macabre tales and Daniel’s own story as he meanders through the town. Daniel is affable, Tumblewater is unique enough to grab the attention of more resistant readers and the tales are outlandish. They are however, very grisly, definitely for older children. I`m not sure whether I like the book or not. The author certainly can write, and the tales are fascinating in a creepy way. Might well be that`s what children need, nowadays? Anyway, the book is worth reading, I`d venture. More about the book to be found here: A curious book, this one.
